Craig tennis sending four to State

Craig’s sectional team poses with their runner-up trophy on Wednesday, April 14, at Palmer Park. From left to right: In the front row (holding the plaque) are Lucia Hyzer and Myrka Ceballos. In the back row are Bridget Reilly, Hattie Plenty, Karyssa Norland, Becca Frank, Ellah Turenne, Allison Grund, Addison Kooyman, and Madison Burrow.

The 2021 season was successful for Craig’s girls tennis team. But it isn’t done yet.

Following a regular season that saw Craig compile a record of 8-2 in dual meets, the Cougars took second at sectionals on Wednesday, April 14.

Four players will head to the state tournament.

Senior Lucia Hyzer finished the season 9-4 and placed 4th at sectionals. Allison Grund, a junior, finished the season 11-2 and was sectional champion.

Doubles team Addison Kooyman (grade 11) and Karyssa Norland (grade 10) finished the season 6-3 and placed fourth at sectionals.

Seniors Rebecca Frank and Ellah Turenne finished the season 5-2 and also placed fourth at sectionals.

Craig’s regular season was one of its most successful in recent memory.  The Cougars beat Milton and defeated Parker. They also beat powerful Verona and Sun Prairie in their dual meet. Both matches were 4-3 victories for the Cougars.

Coach Pam Clutson is proud of her team, especially with the challenges of Covid.

“Practice times were always changing and games were getting canceled and rescheduled,” she said. “The girls were flexible and worked really hard.”

Craig’s tennis players will take the court at Lake Geneva Tennis Club and Badger High School on Thursday and Friday, April 22-23.

Craig’s individual qualifiers will be the first two matches of the tournament.

Craig’s Allison Grund will be the first match of the tournament. She takes on fellow junior Natasha Schiegg of Ashwaubenon at 9 am on Thursday.

Following this match, senior Lucia Hyzer will take on Stoughton’s Annika Goetz. The Stoughton senior is the #8 overall seed.

Craig’s doubles team of Addison Kooyma and Karissa Norland will take on the Green Bay Southwest team of juniors Janelle Novotny and Mallory Kerhin (11). This match will be the first in the doubles bracket, starting Thursday at 9.
