The second girls swim season of the school year has begun.

Craig’s girls team took to the water against the Milton Redhawks on Friday, Feb. 19.

It was the first meet of the school year for both teams.

Girls swim is normally a fall sport, but like all the other fall sports, its season was cancelled by the Badger and Big Eight Conferences. So, now is the time for the girls season, starting six months later than what is typical for these student-athletes.

Craig also has a new swim coach. Jen Punzel joins the program to lead a team of 35 girls.

The season started with a loss to traditional power Milton. The final score was 94-76.

Craig got two individual wins from sophomore Dakota Reece. Reece’s time of 54.93 in the 100 freestyle is only .64 seconds from breaking the Craig school record, set in 2017 by Erin Donagan.

In addition to winning the 100 freestyle, Reece also took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.76.

Reece was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team. Joining her were Sam Guenther, Ally Donagan, and Kadence Woods. The team’s winning time was a 1:58.62.

Listen here to Coach Punzel talk about her first high school meet as coach and her team’s performance.
