Bluebirds take down Ice Bears in OT

Jake Schaffner is a freshman.
He is also the leading scorer–and sixth in the Big Eight–for the Bluebirds, Janesville’s co-op hockey team.
At the Janesville Ice Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the ninth grader scored two goals, lifting the Bluebirds to a 2-1 overtime win over the West Bend Ice Bears.
The Bluebirds were short-handed much of the night due to penalties, and through two periods, they were outshot by West Bend, 32-17.
But their defense–especially their penalty killing–and goaltending kept them in the game, which was a scoreless tie after two periods.
Goalie Cody Kaas, a Craig junior, faced 41 shots and stopped 40 of them.
The only goal he allowed happened two minutes into the third period, as the Ice Bears used a 5-on-3 advantage to break the 0-0 tie.
Nine minutes later–with just under six minutes to go in the game–the Bluebirds tied the game with the first of Jake Schaffner’s two goals.
The third period ended in a 1-1 tie, and the game went to an 8 minute overtime.
After a five minute break–and no Zamboni–the teams played a physical overtime period.
With just over a minute remaining in the sudden-death overtime, Jake Schaffner scored his second goal of the game to seal the win for the Bluebirds.
On the season, the Bluebirds have a record of 7 wins and 12 losses, which includes a 4-7 record in the Big Eight.
