Kallie Lux swings to state

Kallie Lux missed out on qualifying for the state tournament last year as a freshman by only a few strokes.

That only made her more determined. “I have always expected Kallie to go to State,” said head coach Alex Schaar.

At the WIAA girls golf Regional tournament at the Grand Geneva, sophomore Kallie Lux earned her spot.

After shooting an 87 to lead Craig, she will compete at the WIAA State golf tournament at University Ridge on Monday & Tuesday, October 8 and 9.

Her short game has been the most noticeable improvement in her game.

“Chipping and putting is something that we work hard on every day,” said Schaar. “Kallie is at a point where two putting a hole is a disappointment for her.”

Driving the ball is the strength of her game, which her coach calls her “cornerstone.”

But her management of each shot is one of the reasons she will be playing at the state tournament.

“As we play more challenging courses, she is noticing that some fairways are tighter than others and using a smaller club with a more methodical shot selection is better than risking a drive that could potentially get into a bad spot.”

Schaar is proud of her achievement and hard work.

“Everything that happens to Kallie is something that she deserves,” he said.

And he believes more success awaits. “Kallie going to State is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “We have a whole team that is just waiting for their time. Hopefully next year.”

Her keys to success will be to manage the spotlight.

“Not letting the fanfare or venue get into her thought process during her round and playing ‘Kallie Lux golf’ will be the key to success,” said Schaar.  “Just going to University Ridge and competing with the best golfers in the state is an honor.”
