Right after school on September 19, 2023, Ava Burner and Taryn Poland launched the Inner Poet Society in room 609. A small group of 6 students attended the meeting which laid out the plans and intentions for the club.
Although it was only a small group, spirits seemed high as most people were idly chatting and waiting for the meeting to begin.
The meeting itself lasted only thirty minutes but left the participants waiting for more and preparing a poem to answer a prompt.
This week’s prompt was to write an Edgar Allen Poe-themed poem.
Inner Poet Society is a club focusing on poetry. More specifically, it seeks to celebrate the poetry readers and writers of Craig High School.
Taryn, one of the club founders, stated that she founded the club with fellow student Ava Burner to “teach more of [our] fellow students about how to use writing and poetry as a healthy way to express themselves and cope if they need.”
An additional goal of theirs, they seek to create a safe space for students to share their poems, and by extension, their emotions.
She further expanded that “writing allows one to put words to overwhelming emotion or ways of thinking.”
Hopefully, they can create that space and allow a little more breathing room in the stressful days of high school.
While the club’s first meeting only drew around six participants, Taryn hopes for it to grow and gave only one statement of “Join inner poet’s society!”
Meetings are held every week on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 in room 609.
