After months of uncertainty, Craig staff announced in the week before Spring Break that Craig, along with Parker High School, will hold Prom this year at Janesville’s Rotary Botanical Gardens.
In addition, Craig will be having a Spirit Week in the weeks leading up to Prom night in order to promote school spirit, to make up for Homecoming Week.
Taryn Duncan, a physical science teacher and one of the people in charge of organizing Prom said that staff wanted to ensure that students could “enjoy traditional high school events” such as Prom and Spirit Week.
“With the devastating cancelation last year, we knew that we had to try to make it happen this year,” she said.
The 2019-20 school year was cut short due to Covid, and Prom was one of the many events that was cancelled in the wake of school closings.
Since the night is being hosted by Rotary Gardens, the event will be outside, one of many safety precautions being taken in regards to Covid.
This year’s Prom theme is, appropriately, Secret Garden.
“This is a school sponsored event so we will be enforcing the same rules as we do in our building,” said Duncan.
Mandatory mask wearing and social distancing will be enforced by Craig staff.
“We hope to offer an experience very similar to a traditional Prom, but with a few changes to keep everyone safe,” she said.
In regards to traditional experiences, there will be a professional photographer and a DJ, along with light refreshments for attendees.
One tradition being forgone this year is dancing, which would contradict the aforementioned social distancing guidelines. Fortunately, the gardens will open for walks.
Along with Prom, Spirit Week is also making a comeback.
Traditionally, Spirit Week is held in late September or early October during Homecoming Week.
This year, it will feature one of most popular activities of Homecoming Week: dress-up days.
These will take place over the course of two weeks so that everyone can participate.
For students in cohort A, April 19th will be Bikers vs Surfers. The 21st will be Country vs Country Club, the 23rd, Dynamic Duos, the 27th, Color Wars, and the 29th, Spirit Day.
For B Cohort students, each theme will be pushed back by one day, so each event will take place on the 20th, 22nd, 26th, 28th, and 30th, respectively.
Prom night will take place on Saturday, May 1st, from 3 to 7 PM, at Rotary Gardens.
Tickets will be available for $5 and on sale from April 19th to the 30th.
All students are welcome to attend, including early graduates.
Non-Craig students are welcome to attend but must fill out a form at the Assistant Principal’s office.
